About UUIDs

A UUID is a 128-bit value that identifies something uniquely across systems, without a central authority handing out numbers. Written as 8-4-4-4-12 hexadecimal digits.

Version 4

Random, from the browser's cryptographic random source. The version you almost always want.

Version 1

Time-based — a timestamp plus a random node ID (we never use your MAC address).

Nil UUID

All bits zero: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000. Useful as an explicit "none".

No warranty

Provided as-is — including no guarantee of uniqueness. You own the risk of how you use them.
